Dr. Nicola George Ghazi is an American Board Certified Ophthalmologist who subspecializes in ophthalmic pathology and vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery. He is currently a Consultant for retinal diseases and surgery and the Medical Director of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Abu Dhabi. He was a former consultant at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio, USA.
Dr. Ghazi had extensive training whereby he did 2 residencies in ophthalmology, first at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and then a repeat residency at the University of Virginia (UVA), USA. He also underwent 3 years of subspecialty training in eye pathology and retinal diseases and surgery, 1 year at the University of Virginia and the other 2 years at the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
After completing his specialty and subspecialty training in the United States, he worked there for several years, where he became acting residency program director and associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Virginia. He was then recruited to help build the new department of ophthalmology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, where he became the Vice-chair for clinical affairs. Following his experience in the United States, Dr. Ghazi was recruited to Saudi Arabia to the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH), where he worked for 4 years and was awarded the rank of a Senior Academic Consultant. He then joined the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) in 2014 prior to its opening where he contributed to the buildup and development of the eye institute.
