Abu Dhabi Biobank to establish Middle East’s first Eye Bank

This agreement has supported sustainable eye banking capabilities to improve patient access across the UAE and the region.

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Biobank has signed a collaboration agreement with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute during the BIO International Convention 2026 in San Diego to establish the Middle East’s first Eye Bank in Abu Dhabi, a milestone that has aimed to strengthen corneal transplantation capabilities, improve access to sight-restoring services across the UAE and the wider region, and advance the emirate’s transplant and biobanking infrastructure.

The new Eye Bank has marked a significant step in expanding Abu Dhabi’s advanced healthcare ecosystem and supporting world-class corneal transplantation services. The initiative also builds on last year’s partnership between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to establish the institute’s first international facility in Abu Dhabi for ophthalmic care, research, and medical education.
